In recent years, numerous changes have taken place in the field of sniper rifles and small arms from a conceptual, tactical and technical point of view. The latest changes mainly relate to optics, network technologies and new calibers. The focus is on getting more accurate hits at increasingly long distances.
With the increasing availability of more compact optical instruments and fire control systems, the differences between shooters, squad-level snipers, and highly specialized snipers are becoming more blurred. With his assault rifle, every soldier should be able to hit human-sized targets at a range of "half a kilometer." At the same time, the widespread use of sniper rifles remains.
This type of small arms allows you to accurately hit targets at a range of up to 600 m and suppress enemy forces at a distance of up to 800 m. The next level is a semi–automatic sniper system with accurate shooting up to 800 m. For sniper operations at a range of more than 800 m, rifles with a longitudinal sliding bolt, especially calibers, remain the preferred weapon.300 WinMag (7.62 mm x 67) or .338 Lapua Magnum (8.6 mm x 70).
These calibers allow the sniper group to conduct effective shooting at distances up to 1600 m. Both calibers are available in the German Armed Forces: G22A2 from Accuracy International and G29 from CG Haenel. The US Army has moved away from this rule somewhat. Her new Mk22 multi-caliber rifle (Barrett MRAD) can fire 7.62mm x 51, .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum (8.6 mm x 63). This means that, if necessary, ammunition can be replaced with both universal machine guns and new medium-caliber machine guns.
