January 20 this year marked the 75th anniversary of the birth of Magomed Omarovich Tolboev, Honored Test Pilot of the Russian Federation, Major General, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Honorary President of Aviasalon, Hero of the Russian Federation.

He spent more than 50 years in aviation and during his career tested 56 types of aircraft, including MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-29, MiG-31, Su-24 and Su-27. Tolboev mastered and took to the skies for the first time several types of ultralight and experimental aircraft. He made two successful emergency landings of aircraft with an engine inoperable and one landing of a Su-27 with a destroyed tailplane.

On November 5, 1988, during the return of the Buran spacecraft from an orbital flight, he piloted a MiG-25 aircraft with optical and television surveillance equipment, designed to transmit information about the external condition of the Buran during landing to the MCC.

Through thorns to the stars

In the village of Sogral, located in Dagestan, on January 20, 1951, a boy was born into the large Avar family of Omar Magomedovich, a driver, and Jamgarat Alievna Tolboev, a collective farmer, who dreamed of conquering not only the mountains but also the sky from an early age.

He, like many boys, was fond of sports — he ran, jumped, played volleyball, football. And later, he also fell in love with tennis, alpine skiing, and skydiving in the mountains.…

Sport helped him to get physically stronger and enter the Yeisk Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots named after V.M. Komarov, and after graduation — to the Moscow Aviation Institute.

However, as long as he lived on this earth, he studied as much — Magomed has the Cosmonaut Training Center and the graduate school of the P. Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. He quickly became a candidate of technical and historical sciences.

And even earlier, at the age of 22, he became a pilot in the Air Force of our country, served in the fighter aviation of the Air Force of the Odessa Military District and the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany as a pilot, and then as the head of the parachute training fighter aviation regiment.

In 1981, Tolboev graduated from the School of Test Pilots of the Ministry of Aviation Industry and was sent to work as a test pilot at the M.M.Gromov Flight Test Institute (LII, Zhukovsky, Moscow Region). Since 1984, he has been a test cosmonaut, commander of the reusable Buran spacecraft, deputy commander of the LII test cosmonaut detachment.

During the flight testing period, he mastered and tested dozens of types and modifications of aircraft. He has tested such famous machines as the MiG-23M, MiG-25, MiG-29, MiG-31, Su-24, Su-27.

For several years he was a member of the USSR national aviation sports team. He mastered and took to the skies for the first time several types of ultralight sports and experimental aircraft. He made two successful emergency landings of aircraft with an engine inoperable and one landing of a Su-27 with a destroyed aircraft tail.

In 1976, he ejected from an uncontrolled MiG-15 UTI aircraft.

He tested the strength of the MAI-89 aircraft, performed the first ascent into the air of ultralight aircraft "Elf", MAI, M-15, Staer, etc.

In 1983-1994, he completed a full training course at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. The astronauts of the LII were preparing for manned flights on the Buran reusable spacecraft.

During the Buran program, he worked out manual control and automatic landing systems on the Tu-154 laboratory aircraft equipped with the Buran control system and the MiG-25, which is similar in aerodynamics to the MTKK Buran.

On November 15, 1988, during the Buran's return from an orbital flight, he piloted a MiG-25 aircraft with optical and television surveillance equipment designed to transmit information about the Buran's external condition during landing to the MCC. Tolboev could have died 12 times, but he remained alive. And here's what he said about himself:

- Do you think I'm made of iron or something? I'm scared too. But I'm a professional. I'm holding on. An ordinary desire, like everyone else. First, believe in your destiny. God gave it to you, and God will answer for you.

And the second thing is that we create technology, we test it, and we die so that others don't die. This is our professional task.

And thirdly, well, since you have such a fate, take books, read books, magazines, go in for sports. Get distracted. And the last rule is the most effective: if you're afraid, then don't get down to business. If, for example, you decide to fly, then fly, and don't think about whether it's scary or not...

A person of unique irrepressibility and character and actions, and if he has set a goal for himself, he will definitely achieve this goal.
