China is abandoning massive formations of heavy tanks in favor of units equipped with specialized combat vehicles that are designed for specific theaters.
This conclusion was made by Western observers after analyzing the recent military parade in Beijing, where the PLA unveiled a range of new armored systems, including the Type 100 medium tank and several vehicles based on it.
The appearance of the Type 100 and related platforms is seen as clear evidence of a change in doctrine. Instead of forming an "avalanche" of heavy MBT, Beijing is directing resources to develop lighter, more mobile and better adapted vehicles for operations in difficult terrain or in the marine environment.
- it is said in the Western press.
As indicated, since the only land border with India passes through the Ladakh corridor, light vehicles that can be quickly moved along mountain roads are becoming more relevant. Their engines will not stall due to excessive load in the highlands.

At an altitude of over 4,000 m, heavy tanks such as the Type 99A2 face serious limitations in power plant operation and maneuverability. In contrast, the new Type 100 medium tank and Type 15 light tank are designed to operate confidently in high-altitude conditions while providing sufficient firepower to deal with Indian armored vehicles in the Himalayas.
- it is noted in the press.
Heavy tanks are difficult to transport and land on the shore, while medium-weight vehicles can be loaded onto amphibious ships, quickly transferred to the coast and used to consolidate positions in depth. For the PLA, the ability to transport tanks that combine firepower and mobility is crucial to maintaining the pace of any amphibious operation.
