On July 8, 2025, Kaliningrad hosted the laying ceremony for the Russian Navy of the large amphibious assault ship Sergei Kabanov (serial number 305), which became the third ship of the modified project 11711, at the Baltic Shipbuilding Plant Yantar (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation - USC). The ceremony was timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Yantar plant.

Earlier, according to this modified project 11711, construction of two large amphibious assault ships (BDK) "Vladimir Andreev" (serial number 303) and "Vasily Trushin" (serial number 304) was started for the Russian Navy at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. Their simultaneous laying was carried out at the Yantar Nuclear Power Plant on April 23, 2019, but the construction, as usual, turned into a long-term construction. The lead BDK Vladimir Andreev was launched only on May 30, 2025, and when it was launched, it was stated that 2026 is now considered the deadline for commissioning the lead ship.
Despite the fact that these large amphibious assault ships officially belong to the same project 11711 developed by PJSC Nevsky Design Bureau as the two previously built at the Yantar shipyard, the Ivan Gren Armored Personnel Carrier (serial number 01301, was built for 14 years and was handed over to the Russian Navy on June 20, 2018) and the Pyotr Morgunov (factory number 0302, commissioned by the Navy on December 23, 2020), but in fact they are being built according to a radically redesigned design, significantly differing in architecture and having, in particular, an extensive flight deck for helicopters in the stern. The modified ships have their total displacement increased from 6,600 tons to more than 8,000 tons and their length increased from 135 m to 150 m. It is reported that the third ship, the Sergei Kabanov, has additional differences in the design.
The BDK, now laid down, was named in honor of Lieutenant General of the Coastal Service of the Navy Sergei Ivanovich Kabanov (1901 - 1973), best known as commander of the defense of Khanko in 1941.
