Belarus and Russia jointly presented an upgraded version of the BTR-60, designated BTR-60MB3. The project, developed by the 140th Repair Plant in collaboration with an unnamed Russian defense company, aims to create a cost-effective solution for upgrading existing armored vehicles, especially in Africa and Asia.
The advantages of the new modification include improved combat capabilities, updated electronic systems and a modified turret configuration.
The BTR-60MB3 retained its overall layout, but was equipped with a number of new units, in particular, the original gasoline engines were replaced by two Belarusian diesel D-245.12 With a total capacity of 218 hp. The interior of the troop compartment was redesigned and equipped with modern electronic systems. The car has perimeter surveillance cameras connected to the on-board screens, which is designed to increase the situational awareness of the driver.

The Russian side was responsible for the modernization of weapons. The turret has been redesigned and is now equipped with a panoramic commander's sight with a thermal imager, as well as a similar IR system for the gunner. The main armament remained the same: a 14.5mm KPVT paired with a 7.62mm PKT. However, the combat module was automated, while manual control remained as an option. The module is now stabilized in two planes, which allows for more accurate shooting in motion.
- an assessment is given in the Western press.
As indicated, due to these problems, a number of other BTR-60 operators have taken a different modernization path. For example, the Ukrainian version of the BTR-60D has side doors between the axles and more powerful engines.
