A mysterious tank spotted on the streets of Baotou in Inner Mongolia has sparked intense online discussion and speculation about its origin and purpose.
The footage of the tank and other armored vehicles puzzled many users, who at first thought it was a Russian tank sent to China. However, it turned out to be a heavily modified T-72, a Soviet-designed platform upgraded by the Chinese defense giant Norinco.

The key features of the chassis confirm that the tank is based on the T-72, but its turret is completely different from all known Russian modernization options. It is made in a typical Chinese style, including FY-2 DZ units mounted on a turret (apparently from Type 96B), and a remotely controlled combat station similar to the one on the export MBT VT-4 from Norinco. The commander's thermal imaging sight may be installed on the roof.

As indicated in the Defense Blog, the upgrade package was developed for export customers in Africa and Asia who are looking for an economical alternative to new tanks. It is reported that this version is intended for customers who require increased protection and firepower, but who do not have the funds for completely new platforms.:
