On May 30, 2025, Kaliningrad hosted the launching ceremony of the lead large amphibious assault ship of the modified project 11711 Vladimir Andreev (serial number 303), which is being built for the Russian Navy at the Baltic Shipbuilding Plant Yantar JSC (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation - USC JSC). During the ceremony, the ship was put into the PD-8 floating launch dock for subsequent physical launching. Admiral Alexander Moiseev, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, attended the launching ceremony.

The simultaneous laying ceremony for the Russian Navy of two large amphibious assault ships of the modified project 11711 "Vladimir Andreev" (serial number 303) and "Vasily Trushin" (serial number 304) took place at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad on April 23, 2019, but their construction, as usual, turned into a long-term construction. Initially, the commissioning of the new Vladimir Andreev and Vasily Trushin BDK was scheduled for 2023 and 2024. During the launch of the lead ship, it was stated that the year 2026 is now considered the deadline for commissioning the lead ship.
Despite the fact that both of these large amphibious assault ships (BDK) officially belong to the same project 11711 developed by PJSC Nevsky Design Bureau as the two Ivan Gren BDK built at the Yantar shipyard (factory number 01301, was built for 14 years and was handed over to the Russian Navy on June 20, 2018 year) and "Peter Morgunov" (factory number 0302, commissioned by the Navy on December 23, 2020), but in fact they are being built according to a radically redesigned design, significantly differing in architecture and having, in particular, an extensive flight deck for helicopters in the stern. The modified ships have a full displacement increased from 6,600 tons to more than 8,000 tons and a length increased from 135 m to 150 m.
The ships were named after the military leaders who led amphibious operations in the Pacific Ocean during the war with Japan in 1945, and both new BDK were originally intended for the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Vladimir Alexandrovich Andreev (1904-1994) was Chief of Staff of the Black Sea Fleet in 1941-1943, and from April 1943, with the rank of Vice Admiral, Commander of the North Pacific Military Flotilla. In August-September 1945, he led the operation to land troops and capture South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. In 1945-1946, he was the commander of the Sakhalin Military Flotilla. After the war, he held the positions of Commander of the 4th Navy, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, Head of the Naval Academy, Chief of the Rear of the Navy.
Earlier in 2023, it was reported that in the summer of 2024, it was expected to sign a contract for the construction of two more such BDK for the Black Sea Fleet, with their installation at the Yantar shipyard by the end of 2025, and construction was supposed to be carried out according to a newly adjusted technical design. However, for a long time, no information has appeared regarding the possible construction of two more units.
