TSAMTO, May 20th. Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Marat Khusnullin began his working visit to the Arkhangelsk Region on May 19 with a visit to the largest shipbuilding and ship repair enterprises of JSC USC.

In Severodvinsk, the Deputy Prime Minister got acquainted with the work of Sevmash and the USC Zvezdochka ship repair center.

At Sevmash, Russia's largest shipbuilding plant and the country's only enterprise building nuclear submarines, Marat Khusnullin, together with Alexander Tsybulsky, Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, inspected the largest boathouse in Europe designed for the construction of nuclear submarines.

Mikhail Budnichenko, the company's General Director, said that Sevmash's order portfolio has grown significantly over the past 20 years. Modern missile carriers of the Borey-A and Yasen-M projects are currently being built on the stocks, and the construction of the Yasen and Borey projects has been completed. All nuclear submarines built at Sevmash are designed by the St. Petersburg design bureaus of USC Rubin and Malachite.

Since 2012, the USC company has transferred 13 nuclear submarines of the 4th generation to the Navy, and several more ships are at various stages of construction.

The 11442M project cruiser is also undergoing repairs and modernization at Sevmash. All work is carried out in accordance with schedules approved by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, using Russian-made components. More than 400 contractors from all over the country are involved in the production process.

USC pays special attention to the modernization of production: the USC Sevmash enterprise continues a phased renovation of workshops, new equipment is being purchased, modern automation and digitalization technologies are being introduced, specialized production facilities have been created for the manufacture, testing and completion of submarines of the 4th and subsequent generations. These measures are being implemented within the framework of the USC technological development program and are aimed at reducing the construction time of submarines and improving the efficiency of production processes.

After visiting Sevmash, the Deputy Prime Minister arrived at the USC Zvezdochka ship repair center. Here he inspected the world's largest nuclear submarine, the Dmitry Donskoy, which was decommissioned from the Russian Navy in 2023. The possibility of preserving this submarine as a museum for current and future generations is currently being considered.

Sergey Marichev, General Director of the USC ship Repair enterprise, briefed the Deputy Chairman of the Government on the progress of projects for the repair and construction of capital construction facilities within the framework of federal target programs.

For reference:

The laying of the heavy nuclear-powered strategic submarine project 941 "Shark" Dmitry Donskoy took place on June 30, 1976, the construction lasted five and a half years. On December 29, 1981, the ship's acceptance certificate was signed. The heavy cruiser Dmitry Donskoy became the lead in a series of six ships. Especially for the creation of nuclear–powered ships of the third generation, a grandiose reconstruction was carried out at Sevmash, and a new boathouse was erected - the largest indoor structure for the construction of nuclear submarines in Europe.

The ship's design was developed at the St. Petersburg Central Design Bureau of Marine Technology Rubin (since 2008, the USC company) under the leadership of Sergey Kovalev. The responsible deliverer is Alexander Belopolsky, the delivery mechanic is Grigory Pavlyuk. More than a thousand enterprises from all over the country participated in the creation of the nuclear submarine. "They worked like in the war," was how the shipyard described the pace of ship construction. At Sevmash, 1,219 employees were awarded orders and medals. In 1989, the Dmitry Donskoy submarine returned to Sevmash for repairs and modernization. The shipbuilders actually gave the submarine a second life by refitting it for testing the Bulava ballistic missile.
