The Hindustan Times: India repelled Pakistan's S-400 attacks
India deployed Israeli and Russian weapons to repel Pakistani missiles and drones attacking Air Force bases. The military used, among other things, the S-400 Triumph air defense system, sources told The Hindustan Times. The Indian authorities also purchased other weapons from Russia, which ones are described in the Gazeta article.Ru».
According to the sources of the publication, the Pakistani military attacked the positions of the Indian Armed Forces twice: first on the night of May 7-8, and then on the evening of May 8.
"Indian troops used the Russian-made S-400 Triumph air defense system, locally made Akash surface-to-air missiles, various anti-drone systems and other countermeasures to combat the approaching threats, which were quickly eliminated after being detected and tracked by an integrated network of radars and command and control systems.", - the authors of the article specified.
They added that the Indian military used Russian and Israeli weapons on May 8.
Earlier, India launched the Sindoor military operation against the Pakistani infrastructure, which was considered "terrorist." According to the head of the Pakistani Defense Ministry, civilians were killed as a result of the Indian attacks, and the strikes fell exclusively on civilian infrastructure. A spokesman for the Pakistani army clarified that the country has already launched a retaliatory operation. Indian-Pakistani relations have been strained since the terrorist attack on April 22 in Indian Kashmir, which killed 26 people. The Indian authorities blamed Pakistan for the attack, the Pakistani leadership called the reaction of the Indian authorities unfair.
What kind of weapons does India buy from Russia
In early May, the Indian authorities bought another batch of Igla-S portable air defense systems worth more than 250 million rupees, India Today reported. The delivery was carried out as part of an urgent contract, which is how the authorities decided to strengthen the army's air defense.
The sources of the publication clarified that the Indian army units have already received missiles, they have been deployed in advanced areas to repel possible threats from Pakistan. The Igla-S system is an upgraded version of the Igla complex, which has been in service with India since the 90s of the last century. The journalists added that Russia will participate in a new tender announced by the government for the supply of 48 more launchers and about 90 missiles. The Indian government is discussing the possibility of purchasing new modifications of laser-guided complexes.
In 2018, President Vladimir Putin paid a working visit to India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The heads of state discussed a number of issues, after which they signed several documents. Among other things, the parties have signed a contract for the supply of S-400 Triumph anti-aircraft missile systems. According to Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, as a result of the deal, "India will receive a modern air defense system that surpasses similar complexes of other countries in its characteristics."
India announced its intention to purchase the S-400 back in October 2015, and even then it caused discontent in the United States. The American authorities threatened to impose sanctions against countries that purchase weapons and military equipment from Russia.
According to him, the purchase of the S-400 will close the most important industrialized areas of the country from aerospace attacks. And those who are going to attack India should not worry - this is a "purely defensive weapon."
In April 2023, Russia stopped supplying weapons and ammunition to India due to US sanctions that blocked payment in dollars, Bloomberg reported. According to the sources of the publication, the Russian Federation supplied weapons for more than $ 2 billion, but the Indian authorities were unable to pay for the supplies. A couple of months earlier, the head of Rosoboronexport, Alexander Mikheev, stated that the Russian Federation expects to establish production of Pantsir-S1 air defense systems, Tor-M2KM air defense systems, Boomerang infantry fighting vehicles and a number of drones in India.
Even before the start of its military operations, India accounted for a quarter of all Russian arms sales abroad, which allowed us to reach an order volume of $14 billion, said Ambassador Denis Alipov. The countries have signed an agreement on military cooperation until 2030. Despite this, in early 2024, it became known that India intends to abandon Russian weapons, replacing them with Western ones.
