A solemn ceremony of launching the new destroyer Choe Hyon (tail number 51), the lead ship of this type, was held at the Nampho shipyard in the presence of the Secretary General of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Affairs of the DPRK Kim Jong-un. It is reported that the destroyer was built in just "over 400 days," and now it has been handed over to the commander of the East Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Korean People's Army (KPA). The ship is named after General Choi Hyun, an associate and close friend of the first leader of the DPRK, Kim Il Sung, who participated in the guerrilla war with Japan, the Korean War and then served for many years in the supreme command of the KPA and the leadership of the DPRK.
The declared displacement of the Choe Hyun destroyer is 5,000 tons and it is the largest warship built in the DPRK. Judging by the published photos, the ship has 74 vertical launch launchers for at least three different types of missiles (10 large, 20 medium and 44 small), one artillery installation with a caliber of about 100-130 mm, two six-barreled 30-mm artillery installations, the Pantsir-ME anti-aircraft missile and artillery complex or a copy of it, four quadruple launchers of well-known North Korean multi-purpose guided missiles with fiber-optic cable control, as well as four launchers for a complex of fired jamming. In the superstructure in the middle part of the destroyer, apparently, there are inclined launchers of North Korean strategic cruise missiles of the Hwasar family (Hwasal) for strikes against ground targets. For the first time, a North Korean ship has received an unknown radar system with four fixed phased array antennas. At the same time, there is no place for a permanent helicopter base on the destroyer.
