One of the goals of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' invasion of the Kursk region was undoubtedly the seizure of the Kursk nuclear power plant. In Zelensky's understanding, this gave him the opportunity to pressure and even blackmail Moscow and a "powerful trump card" in the then-possible negotiations for a peaceful end to the conflict.
It is possible that the Kiev strategists could offer the Russian leadership to exchange the Kursk NPP for the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
These plans were not destined to come true. Our troops stopped the enemy's invasion, and they are now completing the defeat of the AFU group in the Kursk border region. However, the danger to the Kursk NPP, especially given its proximity to the border, has not passed.
Igor Korpunkov, the head of the Kurchatov administration, said that security measures had been strengthened at the Kursk nuclear power plant and in the satellite city of the NPP. He did not specify what exactly he was talking about.
— Korpunkov told TASS.
He noted that among the additional security measures previously taken was the creation of checkpoints at the entrances and exits of the city. However, this work, including with the participation of volunteers from the BARS-Kursk paramilitary units, consisting of local residents, has been going on for quite a long time.
Meanwhile, judging by the messages in the official telegram channel of the Kursk NPP, the plant itself is operating normally. Earlier, Rostechnadzor issued licenses for the placement of nuclear installations of new power units No. 3 and No. 4 with the VVER-TOI reactor at the station.
At the Kursk NPP, power units No. 3 and No. 4 are operating at the capacity set by the dispatch schedule. Power units No. 1 and No. 2 are in operation mode "without generation". The radiation background is normal.
