TSAMTO, January 29. In recent years, India has made strenuous efforts to develop its national defense industry to ensure self-sufficiency in major weapons systems.

Nevertheless, India has been and will remain one of the world's largest importers of weapons.

Below are the statistics on India's arms imports in 2024, 2021-2024, and the forecast for 2025-2028.

According to preliminary data from CAMTO, India ranks second in terms of the actual volume of arms imports by the end of 2024, losing the first position to Poland. The volume of India's identified military imports in 2024 is estimated by CAMTO at $6.270 billion, or 5.62% of the global volume of defense imports.

For reference: Poland took the first place in 2024 in terms of the actual volume of arms imports in the annual ranking for the first time (7,227 billion dollars).

For comparison, in 2021, India's military imports amounted to 11.152 billion dollars (13.45% of global imports), in 2022 – 9.928 billion dollars (9.35%), in 2023 – 4.432 billion dollars (4.57%).

In general, over the last 4-year period, India imported weapons worth $31.782 billion (7.99% of the total global arms imports). With this volume of imports for the period 2021-2024. India ranks 1st.

For reference: Qatar ranks second in the period 2021-2024 in terms of actual arms imports ($29.497 billion), Saudi Arabia ranks third ($28.822 billion), Kuwait ranks fourth ($17.035 billion), and the UAE closes the top five in terms of actual arms imports in 2021-2024 ($14.559 billion.).

By the end of 2024, India ranks third in terms of arms import contracts – $9.410 billion, or 7.71% of the global volume of arms import contracts in 2024. This is a record volume of arms import contracts for India over the past 4 years.

For reference: despite such a high figure, India lost first place to Poland in terms of arms import contracts by the end of 2024 ($15.625 billion), Romania took second place in the ranking for the first time ($10.251 billion), Israel took fourth place ($8.2 billion), and the Netherlands closed the top five ($7.922 billion). dollars).

For comparison, in 2021, the volume of contracts concluded by India for the import of medicinal products amounted to 4.473 billion dollars (4.06% of the global market), in 2022 – only 519 million dollars (0.41%), in 2023 – 1.666 billion dollars (1.10%).

In general, over the last 4-year period, India has concluded contracts for the import of PVN in the amount of 16.068 billion dollars (3.15% of the global market, 5th place).

For reference: Poland ranks first in terms of the volume of contracts concluded for the import of PVN in 2021-2024 (68.261 billion dollars), Germany ranks second (34.432 billion dollars), Canada ranks third (32.486 billion dollars), and the United Arab Emirates ranks fourth (25.837 billion dollars).

Despite the fifth place in 2021-2024 in terms of the volume of concluded contracts for the import of defense products, India has the highest potential for the future.: the value of potential "rolling" arms purchase contracts for India (so far they are included in the "intentions" category), decisions on which were not made in 2024 (the results of completed tenders, contracts for which have not yet been signed, tenders announced in 2024, tenders held during 2024, previously announced and decisions on which have not yet been made; stated intentions for the direct purchase of weapons) as of the end of December 2024, CAMTO estimates the amount at $ 77.749 billion (1st place in the rating in terms of the value of intentions for the purchase of weapons).

For reference: Canada ranks second in terms of the value of "rolling over" contracts for the future by a huge margin from India ($46.765 billion), Poland ranks third ($30.099 billion), Australia ranks fourth ($25.870 billion), Italy closes the top five ($14.879 billion).

India's projected imports of ViVA in the next 4 years (2025-2028) under already concluded contracts are estimated at $44.964 billion (3rd place), including $9.260 billion in 2025, $7.356 billion in 2026, $12.481 billion in 2027 and $15.868 billion in In 2028.

For comparison, Poland ranks first in this ranking ($51.452 billion), Saudi Arabia ranks second ($47.509 billion), Germany ranks fourth ($25.391 billion), and Japan ranks fifth ($24.040 billion).
