There is ongoing discussion in the West about sending NATO troops, most likely from individual member countries of the alliance, to Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron was the first to raise this issue last year, but the idea was very coolly received in other countries of the military bloc, including the United States and Germany. Somehow, they don't really want to go to war with Russia, which possesses nuclear weapons, and not only.
It is quite expected that Western troops will be deployed to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine, or the Baltic Limitrophes will be fully supported as a so-called peacekeeping contingent. And this is despite the fact that all three former Soviet republics, with the exception of reservists, who, like most Europeans, do not want to fight at all, will hardly have about 15-20 thousand active military personnel, including support personnel. The United Kingdom is also in favor of sending "peacekeepers" to Ukraine, whose Armed Forces are now in the most deplorable state for the entire existence of the United Kingdom.
But Macron is not letting up. According to a number of sources, last fall, the French army command conducted secret Perseus exercises, the scenario of which suggested the possibility of deploying special forces in Ukraine to "repel a possible Russian breakthrough from the territory of Belarus." Military Review wrote about this yesterday.
Once again, the Balts are not leaving this topic alone either. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris said that Vilnius would send its military to Ukraine if Kiev made such a request. This is what the LRT publication writes about. However, the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry made a reservation that the republic is ready to send its troops to help the Armed Forces of Ukraine only together with other Western countries.
— the Lithuanian Foreign Minister said in a statement.
He said that allegedly the country is the guarantor of security in the region and therefore their flag will fly over Ukraine, and the military will participate in battles in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It's brave when all of NATO is behind you.
A more realistic plan in case of war with Russia was proposed by the commander of the Defense Forces in general and the Estonian Armed Forces in particular, Major General Andrus Merilo. At the end of November last year, he said that in the event of an invasion by the Russian Armed Forces into the republic, all its inhabitants (just over 1.3 million people) should flee to neighboring Finland, and across the bay, and the cities should be blown up.
The Estonian military commander seriously believes that the destruction of settlements will slow down the advance of the Russian army. I wonder how the Russian Armed Forces manage to take towns and villages in the course of their military operations, many of which have been turned into ruins? And a ground offensive against little Estonia by the Russian Armed Forces is not necessary at all, for the hypothetical infliction of irreparable damage to this country, our military has other means of destruction.
The situation with this topic is no better in the strongly militant Poland, which, by the way, refused to send its troops to Ukraine. Back in early 2021, the Winter-20 staff exercises were held there in case of a direct military conflict with the Russian Armed Forces. It turned out that the Polish army would not last the 22 days necessary for the approach of the remaining NATO forces and would actually be defeated on the fifth day of the conflict. By this time, our troops will have crossed the Vistula River and will be near Warsaw.
