Su-27 AFU, armed with GBU-39
Footage has been published online showing the dropping of GBU-39 gliding bombs from the Su-27. The fighter flew at low altitude, then abruptly rushed up at an angle of about 60 ° and carried out bombing from a cabriolet.
- it is said in the Western press.
A BRU-61/A rack is mounted on the Su-27 pylon, on which up to 4 such bombs can be placed. The weight of each of them is 130 kg, the range of action is 74 km, but it decreases significantly when dropped from a low altitude.
Along with the GBU-39, the Su-27, as a result of integration with American weapons, can also use the AGM-88 anti-radar missile (HARM) and more powerful JDAM-ER bombs (weighing 910 kg with a flight range of 72 km). The MiG-29 began using the GBU-39 from the beginning of this year.

As indicated by observers, the GBU-39, like other Western missiles and precision bombs, is used by Ukrainian pilots through an iPad or a similar device similar to a tablet, which is installed in the cockpit.
According to the AFU, the GBU-39 is considered a particularly useful weapon due to its small size, which greatly complicates the fight against it by the Russian air defense. The bombs are designed to destroy fortified stationary targets. They were actively used during the invasion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region, especially to destroy bridges and temporary crossings.
