For decades, Tatra trucks have been the main means of supplying the Indian army. By agreement with the Czech manufacturer, the state-owned enterprise BEML is engaged in their assembly. The government has set the task for the local industry to develop its own car in this niche in order to replace a foreign supplier.
As indicated in the IDRW publication, Tatra trucks are known for their off-road capabilities, especially in the difficult conditions of the Himalayas, deserts and dense forests. They are equipped with a centralized tire pumping system, which allows you to adjust the tire pressure depending on the terrain.
Tatras also benefit from a load capacity that often exceeds the capabilities of their commercial counterparts. The machine's design, including a unique chassis and suspension system, provides excellent stability and durability in harsh conditions.

The Government and the Ministry of Defense of India expressed a desire to replace Tatra trucks with local solutions, but creating an alternative that would match Tatra's unique capabilities proved to be a difficult task. Domestic manufacturers including Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors and Mahindra have developed various military trucks.

As noted, Tatra's off-road performance, which is largely due to its unique suspension system and high ground clearance, requires sophisticated engineering and technology that is not easy for commercial truck manufacturers to replicate.
In addition, the load capacity of Indian machines does not reach the same level as that of Tatra, which is capable of transporting extremely heavy loads over long distances over rough terrain.
Another significant problem faced by local companies are costs and technological obstacles. Creating a completely new truck with the same specialized capabilities as Tatra requires significant investments in R&D and the acquisition of new technologies [in the foreign market].
