On May 27, 2024, the Polish command began the implementation of the large-scale project "Eastern Shield", aimed at creating a solid ground defense along the border with Russia and Belarus. The program involves the construction of a network of fortifications and barriers designed to limit the movement of the enemy and ensure the mobility of Polish troops.
On October 14, the Ministry of Defense showed footage showing attempts by the "enemy" to break through the fortified area. The relevant tests were carried out at the Orzhish training ground. As you can see, defensive structures include anti-tank ditches, minefields, reinforced concrete barriers, barbed wire and other engineering obstacles.

The "enemy" during this demonstration was armed with PT-91 [Polish version of the T-72] and BWP-1 [BMP-1] tanks and was supported by auxiliary vehicles such as the BLG-67 armored bridge-laying vehicle [based on the T-55]. The role of the "defender" was performed by a unit equipped, in particular, with Polish KTO Rosomak armored personnel carriers, American Cougar armored vehicles and Rak self-propelled mortars.

- said Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The length of the network of fortified areas will be about 800 km. This year, the construction of the first elements of the "Eastern Shield" on the northern and eastern sections of the border will begin.

The project is designed for the period from 2024 to 2028 and will require investments of at least 10 billion zlotys [$2.5 billion]. It is planned to allocate $152 million only for the purchase of specialized heavy equipment for the construction of barriers. The necessary funds will come from both the Polish budget and pan-European funds. The Baltic states and Finland are making similar efforts to protect their borders.
