One of the directions of development of the Russian Navy is to increase amphibious capabilities through the construction of new ships designed for landing troops. They belong to project 11711. At the same time, the Nevsky Design Bureau, which developed it, proposes to build new large amphibious assault ships in the modified Cayman modification.
As indicated in the Western press, unlike the Soviet BDK, the 11711 project is already very similar to NATO analogues – ships of the LPD type (landing platform dock). "Cayman" brings the Russian approach to BDK even closer to the Western one.
