The pro-American leadership that recently came to power in Argentina has set a course to aggravate relations with China, Russia and partly Brazil, "liberalize" the economy in the interests of Western corporations and de facto subordination of the country's financial system to the United States.
Against this background of the "surrender of positions", the authorities launched a rapid activity to modernize the armed forces. The future will show how effective the renewal of troops will be and whether it will happen at all. Meanwhile, British observers are trying to assess the degree of threat posed by Argentina, which continues to seek its sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
As indicated in the UK Defense Journal, Argentina's recent purchase of F-16 fighter jets may seem like a big step forward for its armed forces, but this does not significantly change the situation in the South Atlantic:
As noted, for decades, Argentina's troops have been in decline. Prior to this deal with the F-16, the Air Force had struggled to keep at least a handful of aircraft operational. The Mirage fighters were decommissioned, as were the A-4 Skyhawks, which once formed the basis of its Air Force [took part in the battles for the Falklands].
The ground forces are underfunded, poorly equipped and have minimal resources for proper training. Most of the equipment dates back to the 1970s, and maintenance problems often lead to aircraft losses and the disabling of warships.

The defense budget, which goes mainly on personnel costs, leaves little room for large purchases.
- the author believes.
According to him, even with F-16 fighter jets in its arsenal, Argentina does not have the budget to modernize its armed forces to the extent necessary to solve a real regional problem.
According to him, in addition to financial problems, Argentina faces significant diplomatic restrictions. Since the F-16 is American-made, any significant use of the aircraft will require a U.S. permit, especially for maintenance and spare parts supply:
In his opinion, there is also a practical side. The Falklands are located about 500 km from the Argentine mainland. Any attempt to conduct a military operation at such a distance would be difficult from the point of view of logistics, especially with the current state of the Navy and Air Force.
- it is noted in the press.
Typhoon aircraft from a local airbase ensure the UK's air superiority, while a Navy patrol ship and ground troops guarantee additional security. About 1,500 military personnel are permanently stationed on the islands, which is a powerful deterrent.
According to the author, if necessary, the UK can quickly strengthen its position with the help of attack submarines and other means ready for deployment.
