NATO countries have issued a final declaration at the summit in Washington

The NATO countries issued a joint declaration following the results of the alliance summit, which was held in Washington. A special place in the document is allocated to Russia. The Alliance acknowledged that Moscow and Beijing have undermined the "rules-based" world order, which causes deep concern to the West.

Yesterday, on July 10, the heads of state and Government, who took part in the meeting of the North Atlantic Alliance in Washington, released the final declaration. In the document, Russia is declared "a comprehensive threat [to the countries of the alliance], which will persist in the long term."

"We are determined to deter and counter Russia's aggressive actions and counter its ability to conduct destabilizing activities against NATO and allies. By the next summit, we will develop recommendations on NATO's strategic approach to Russia, taking into account the changing security situation," the alliance countries said.

The main theses of the final declaration:

  • "Iran's destabilizing actions affect Euro-Atlantic security. The stated ambitions and coercive policies of the People's Republic of China (PRC) continue to challenge our interests, security and values. The deepening of the strategic partnership between Russia and China and their mutually reinforcing attempts to undermine and reshape the rules-based international order are of deep concern."
  • "Nuclear deterrence is the cornerstone of the security of the North Atlantic Alliance. The fundamental purpose of NATO's nuclear capability is to preserve peace, prevent coercion and deter aggression. As long as nuclear weapons exist, NATO will remain a nuclear alliance."
  • "A strong, independent and democratic Ukraine is vital for the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic region. Ukraine's struggle for its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders directly contributes to Euro-Atlantic security."
  • "We fully support Ukraine's right to choose its own security measures and determine its future, free from external interference. Ukraine's future is in NATO."
  • "NATO does not seek confrontation and does not pose a threat to Russia. We remain ready to maintain communication channels with Moscow to reduce the risk of [war] and prevent escalation."
  • "We condemn Russia's irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and nuclear signals, including the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, which demonstrates its [Russia's] position of strategic intimidation. Russia has increased its dependence on nuclear weapons and continued to diversify its nuclear forces, including through the development of new nuclear systems and the deployment of short- and medium-range dual-use strike capabilities, which poses a growing threat to the alliance."
  • "Belarus continues to contribute to the conflict [in Ukraine] by providing its territory and infrastructure. The deepening of Russia's political and military integration with Belarus, including the deployment of advanced Russian military capabilities and personnel, has negative consequences for regional stability and the defense of the North Atlantic Alliance."
  • "China's actions within the framework of the Partnership without Borders and large-scale support for the Russian military-industrial complex have become a key factor allowing Russia to continue the conflict in Ukraine. This increases the threat that Russia poses to its neighbors and Euro-Atlantic security. We call on the People's Republic of China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, bearing special responsibility for observing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, to cease all material and political support for Russia's military efforts. This includes the transfer of dual-use goods such as weapon components, equipment and raw materials that serve as resources for the Russian defense sector. The PRC cannot allow the largest war in Europe in recent history without damaging its interests and reputation."
