Romania became the 10th country in the world and the 5th in Europe to purchase the 155 mm South Korean K9 Thunder howitzer. On July 9, Hanwha Aerospace signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the country worth approximately 1.4 trillion won ($1 billion), involving the supply of a large batch of equipment: 54 self-propelled guns K9, 36 TZM K10, ammunition and various auxiliary vehicles, both tracked and wheeled.
Previously, orders for the K9 ACS were placed by India, South Korea, Norway, Poland, Turkey, Finland, Estonia, Australia and Egypt. Seoul also offered Bucharest to purchase the Redback BMP from Hanwha Aerospace. This armored vehicle has significant similarities with the K9 in terms of transmission and chassis, which can simplify the production, operation and maintenance of military equipment for Romania.
The K9 Thunder will be manufactured [by assembly] and repaired mainly in Romania. The shipment of ACS is designed for 5 years, the first deliveries are expected in early 2027.

As of early 2024, the K9 Thunder held more than 50% of the global market for self-propelled howitzers. Since its development began in 1989, about 1,800 copies have been produced. The adoption of this ACS by a number of countries is due to its technical characteristics, such as high rate of fire, range and mobility.
The rapid execution of orders by the South Korean defense industry plays an important role. Against the background of the signing of the contract with Bucharest, Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-yong visited the company's factory in Changwon, urging employees to ensure the fulfillment of the Romanian order.
