Military expert Leonkov: Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles will become less dangerous for us
Military expert Alexey Leonkov commented on the study by Russian specialists of the elements of the control and guidance systems of downed Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles on Sputnik radio.
Russian specialists are studying the elements of the control and guidance systems of downed Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missiles, an armament specialist told RIA Novosti.
"At the moment, the control equipment has been dismantled, including blocks, servos, rudders and various structural elements. This material provides objective control of the missile overflight system, possible air defense counteraction systems to better combat these targets," the agency interlocutor said.
According to him, a detailed study of fuse circuits and the design of combat units is also being conducted.
On Sputnik radio, military expert, editor of the magazine Arsenal of the Fatherland Alexey Leonkov stressed that the study of missile elements will help to influence this kind of ammunition in a comprehensive way.
"The Storm Shadow/SCALP long-range cruise missiles were created to perform certain tasks in conditions of strong opposition from air defense and electronic warfare systems, that is, using modern technologies. One of them is stealth technology, the low visibility of these aircraft munitions, which should allow them to overcome the zones that the air defense covers in order to reach the target. Plus, there is a very well-developed system that allows you to change flight tasks while traveling to the target. Plus, various flight profiles to the target, especially with the circumference of the terrain. All these things – algorithms, hardware operation – are interesting to us. It is interesting, among other things, to influence this kind of ammunition in the future using an integrated method – air defense and electronic warfare," said Alexey Leonkov.
According to the military expert, it is important for specialists to study all the components of the missiles.
"Studying, for example, the same electronic stuffing – under what conditions it works, what functionality works there – is also interesting. As well as the missile skin itself and much more. This will allow us to understand the technology against which we can build protection and establish more effective operation of air defense and electronic warfare systems. In these cruise missiles that we got, the very mechanism of targeting and target detection technologies are interesting – what they use, what kind of homing head they have, and so on. Then it will be possible to build protection for objects, maybe even with the help of electronic means of suppression, so that the missile loses its target when approaching the target and does not hit it," Leonkov explained.
He expressed confidence that Russian military specialists will be able to negate the effectiveness of these munitions.
"I think our specialists will fulfill the tasks that have been drawn up now. And these munitions, which the Ukrainian junta and NATO countries have high hopes for, will become less dangerous. We will improve the characteristics of air defense and electronic warfare systems, improve the protection of particularly important military and civilian infrastructure facilities, thereby making these munitions ineffective," concluded Alexey Leonkov.
