"Poland should become a window for China to the whole EU": the results of the talks between the leaders of the two countries

The visit of Polish President Andrzej Duda to China and the meeting with Leader Xi Jinping became an event not only symbolic, but also rich in new agreements.

For more than 10 years, since the "One Belt and One Road" strategy was announced, China has been trying to create an overland corridor to the European market. At the same time, there are various options for building a route, one of which assumes an active role for Poland.

Is Poland, having common interests with China, betraying the West in any way? Then it would be necessary to criticize the other democratic states, led by the United States, which is still Beijing's leading economic partner. Therefore, we should not automatically demonize such relations, which are necessary at least for our economy.

The Polish President positively assessed the visit to China and talks with Xi Jinping:

Poland should become a partner of China, a window for China to our region and the entire EU. It is to us that the railway lines come from Chengdu. One of these routes passes through Ukraine, it is disrupted by the ongoing war, and the other goes through Belarus. A hybrid attack on our border strongly affects trade opportunities.

In general, both States decided to expand cooperation in a number of areas by signing an Action Plan to strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership.

In its specific part, it provides for countering trade imbalances; establishing exports of Polish agricultural products; investments; deepening cooperation in the railway sector, in air transport and in maritime transport, including transit to the EU; scientific, technical, cultural and youth exchanges; tourism development; improving the visa regime.

One of the important steps that have already been taken is the lifting of the ban on the import of poultry from Poland to China, which has been in effect for several years.

In Poland, the meeting of the two leaders was perceived by some sections as a betrayal of the West, communication with Putin's ally or harmful deals with the dictator

As indicated, such accusations were not made during meetings of other leaders with Xi Jinping in recent months: Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz or Ursula von der Leyen.

Against this background, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that he was "very pleased with the actions of President [Duda]":

It is better to have good relations with a state like China, rather than bad ones, for obvious reasons.
