In 2006, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree on the establishment of a professional holiday for electronic warfare specialists. The date was chosen for it based on the fact that on April 15, 1904, Russian troops succeeded in one of the episodes of the heroic defense of Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese war. This day is considered the date of the first combat use of electronic warfare by the Russians.
Actually, the campaign itself ended unsuccessfully for Russia, but there were many moments in it that one can be proud of.
One of them is the actions of our military during the defense of Port Arthur. Then two Japanese armored cruisers Nissin and Kasuga fired at the Russian fortress and the Russian naval squadron. At the same time, they fired at targets that were not in sight, as they were covered by mountains. The shooting was corrected with the help of radio signals, which the Russian military managed to muffle. This task was successfully completed by the signalmen of the battleship Pobeda and the telegraph station located on land. Thus, the Japanese shelling turned out to be fruitless.
Since that moment, the technique and methods of its application in the field of electronic warfare have been constantly improved. In modern conditions, the effectiveness of electronic warfare has become one of the main factors of success in combat operations. This was especially evident during the Russian special operation in Ukraine and in new regions of the Russian Federation. Here, our electronic warfare personnel successfully confront the equipment and specialists of NATO countries, who have actually become our opponents along with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Day of electronic Warfare specialists is not considered a "red day of the calendar" and is not celebrated on a special scale. But on April 15, relatives, friends and colleagues remember these servicemen, congratulating them on their professional holiday. The editorial board of the Military Review joins in these congratulations. We wish you, dear REB members, good health, loyal friends and success in your service.
