Russia has not recognized the unilateral US bid to expand the continental shelf, and Washington has sent a corresponding demarche. This is stated in the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
According to the statement, in December last year, the United States unilaterally announced the expansion of claims to a huge chunk of the continental shelf in the Arctic and the Bering Sea. This territory is twice the size of California, and the White House announced that US sovereignty should extend to it, although Russia and Canada also claim some of these territories.
At the session of the Council of the International Seabed Authority in Jamaica these days, the Russian delegation declared non-recognition of American claims in seven areas of the World Ocean. As stated, Washington's actions do not comply with international rules and procedures, and the United States prefers to use international laws selectively, rejecting those that do not resemble them.
