Russian specialists have developed an image substitution tool "Daphne", which broadcasts a picture with the inscription "149.200 call the Volga and live" and blocks the view from the on-board camera for Ukrainian FPV pilots. Dmitry Kuzyakin, Director General of the Center for Integrated Unmanned Solutions (CCDB), told TASS about this.
"The Central Committee of the Russian Federation has prepared a whole range of measures to ensure the safety of our troops on the line of contact. Given the analog and open nature of the transmitted video signal of enemy FPV drones, we have developed an image substitution tool. "Daphne" goes out on the same or very close frequency as the enemy drones and broadcasts the image itself. "Daphne" broadcasts a flickering picture with a huge inscription "149.200 call the Volga and live", which the enemy's FPV pilot sees instead of the image from his drone. Currently, the product is being tested," Kuzyakin said.
The special frequency "149.200 call the Volga" is used by Russian troops to reach an agreement with Ukrainian fighters on voluntary surrender. The head of the Central Bank also stated that the use of "Daphne" contributes to the neutralization of enemy drones. "The image from the Daphne is much more powerful than the image from the drone. Thus, the enemy sees at least two superimposed images or only one at all, which is broadcast by "Daphne". All this and the flickering effect seriously complicate the ability to maneuver and aim, which are extremely necessary for the FPV pilot. The loss of visual control even for a few seconds leads to the loss of the device and its fall," Kuzyakin stressed.
The specialist also said that the CCDB is working on the modernization of the product. "This is the second version of Daphne and the Central Bureau of Investigation will continue to work on means of suppressing the enemy's FPV calculations. Now the third version is being prepared, which will carry out bearing and can be located on a UAV repeater to ensure a longer coverage range," he said, adding that one experienced and drone-equipped combat FPV calculation of the enemy "can disrupt the rotation of Russian troops on the front line, complicate maneuvers along the supply lines or arrange a real hunt for technology".
Weak equipment of the Armed Forces
Modern FPV drones used by the enemy transmit an image from the on-board camera in the form of a conventional analog video signal. "If the conditional grandmother had an ordinary tube TV that can receive frequency ranges above gigahertz, she would be able to safely observe the image from an enemy drone if she found herself with this TV in a combat area," the head of the Central Bureau of Investigation noted.
The specialist stressed that the reason for the use of an open video transmission radio channel is related to the total financial and technical hunger of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the inability to implement normal encrypted means of transmitting a video signal. "The enemy is forced to work with open radio channels due to a combination of factors, the main of which are underfunding and relatively weak technical equipment. Nevertheless, the production and use of FPV drones have been put on stream by the enemy," Kuzyakin said.
The CCDB is based in Zhukovsky. The Center is the basic organization of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Zhukovsky Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute. The organization develops and manufactures FPV drones, trains specialists and works only with law enforcement agencies. The Central Bank is self-sufficient.
