NI: Japan will have to abandon the "peaceful" position and create nuclear weapons
MOSCOW, December 9/ Sputnik Radio. Japan will have to acquire its own nuclear weapons in order not to rely on US help in deterring Russia, China and the DPRK, according to former editor of The New York Times Barry Geven.
Geven noted that Japan had previously been proud of its position as a "country of the world" that fought to stop the use of nuclear weapons and, ultimately, their destruction. At the same time, the country relied on the "nuclear umbrella" of the United States, which was supposed to protect it from the external threat of China and the DPRK.
However, now Tokyo's "sole defender" has weakened itself with fruitless wars in Asia and the Middle East, the publicist notes. The United States is increasingly withdrawing from the international arena, rediscovering isolationist traditions, which puts Japan's security at risk.
Sputnik Radio reported that Russia had notified Japan of the termination of the treaty on the elimination of nuclear weapons.
