PLA submarine with a "standard" cabin

The newest Chinese non-nuclear submarine type 039C Yuan Class has acquired a new element that contributes to increased stealth.

The Type 039C Yuan class PLA submarine has an angled sail installed for the first time. We are sure that this is part of the technology that increases secrecy. The inclined shape of the deckhouse design reduces the visibility of the submarine for the active sonar of the enemy

- it is noted in the publication Naval News.

A similar angular sail will be used on the Swedish A-26 class submarine and the German Type-212CD. On the A-26, the wheelhouse will have the same shape, while the 212CD goes even further by designing the entire outer hull inclined and sacrificing hydrodynamic parameters at the same time.

Currently, the Chinese boat is the only submarine that has an angled sail and is in the water at the same time

- the publication says.

According to the author, the size of the stealth elements on the Chinese submarine suggests that they are trying to "hide" it from medium-frequency sonars. At the same time, its design will be less effective against low-frequency sonars with a long wavelength. But they tell the enemy only that there is something in the water, not allowing to identify the object.

Because of the new design, it will be difficult for the enemy to determine the true nature of the submarine. This can lead to delays or miscalculations that the submarine crew can use to their advantage.

- the author believes.

As explained, the introduction of these changes in the design of submarines is caused by the growing importance of active sonar in underwater warfare. It is much more desirable to detect the enemy by means of passive observation, simply by "listening" to him, since with an active search, the target can catch the sonar signal much earlier, usually at a distance twice as large.

During the Cold War, passive sonar was key. However, passive detection depends on the noise level of the enemy submarine. As submarines become quieter, passive detection becomes less useful

- indicated in the publication.

Active sonar is expected to play an increasing role in underwater warfare. At the same time, advances in the field of marine drones make it possible to move active sonar emitters from the main submarine to a disposable drone.
