On the eve of the professional holiday of rocket scientists and gunners, the chief of rocket troops and artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Dmitry KLIMENKO, answered the questions of the "Red Star". He spoke about the experience gained by rocket troops and artillery during the special military operation, and the effectiveness of their actions now, directions for the further development of the type of troops, which consists in the transition of rocket troops and artillery to a qualitatively new state – the reconnaissance and firing system, samples of modern weapons and military equipment entering missile and artillery military units formation, development of new high-precision ammunition for artillery systems and multiple rocket launchers.
– Dmitry Nikolaevich, for the second year now, gunners and rocket scientists have been celebrating a professional holiday in a combat situation. What overall experience have rocket troops and artillery gained during the special military operation and what is the effectiveness of their actions now?
– High intensity of combat operations, constant combat work in difficult conditions, continuous search for the most effective ways to perform firing tasks to defeat the enemy during a special military operation – all this is the main factor in increasing the level of professional skill of rocket scientists and gunners. And the high results of the enemy's fire defeat that you observe indicate that they have achieved a high level of professional skill.

– Are the directions of the development of the type of troops adjusted taking into account the experience of the combat use of rocket troops and artillery during a special military operation and does this experience confirm the correctness of the given path for the transition of rocket troops and artillery into a reconnaissance and firing system?
– The experience of conducting a special military operation undoubtedly confirms the correctness of certain directions for the further development of the type of troops, which consists in the transition of missile troops and artillery to a qualitatively new state – a reconnaissance and fire system, which is a combination of reconnaissance, fire, control and providing subsystems for the most effective performance of tasks for the fire defeat of the enemy.
In a special military operation, the largest volume of tasks for the fire defeat of the enemy by rocket troops and artillery is solved precisely by conducting reconnaissance and strike actions. For this purpose, reconnaissance and shock (fire) complexes are being created, in which the "reconnaissance - detection – defeat" cycle is minimized and the effectiveness of fire damage is significantly increased.
In addition, the constant analysis of the experience gained in the combat use of rocket troops and artillery allows us to quickly adjust the ways to achieve the main goal of the construction of a kind of troops (transition to a reconnaissance and firing system). This is reflected not only in the improvement of modern, but also in the creation of promising models of weapons and methods of combat use of formations of rocket troops and artillery.
Thus, units of the branch of the armed forces effectively conduct maneuver-firing actions with minimal time spent on firing (starting) positions and performing an anti-fire maneuver to a safe area, which significantly increases the survivability of formations of the branch of the armed forces on the battlefield.

– A year ago, the command of missile troops and artillery noted, taking into account the experience gained in a special military operation, that counter–battery warfare is one of the main tasks solved by missile troops and artillery. Is this the case now? Have new tactics appeared?
– That's right, in conditions of intense hostilities, in order to reduce the level of losses of their troops and achieve fire superiority over the enemy, counter-battery warfare comes to the fore.
Rocket troops and artillery effectively solve this problem. Thus, during the repulse of the APU offensive, rocket troops and artillery have already destroyed more than 3,500 artillery systems and MLRS of the enemy.
In addition to the classic artillery systems, when conducting counter-battery warfare, we effectively use barrage ammunition of the Lancet type. This makes it possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of the fight against foreign jet and artillery systems supplied by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
– Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu held a meeting on October 17 this year on the prospects for the development and increase in the production of barrel artillery and MLRS systems. He noted that in a special military operation it is especially important to quickly fill the need for weapons of destruction. Tell me, do our defense enterprises manage to replenish these reserves in a timely manner?
– Indeed, this task plays an important role, and our military-industrial complex successfully copes with it. The manufacturers of artillery weapons have already increased the volume of finished products several times, which allows us to provide and satisfy the needs for equipment in the territory of combat operations.
In addition, the relative simplicity of the design and operation of domestic artillery systems in comparison with Western analogues makes it possible to eliminate some of the malfunctions that occur during combat use by calculations. And more complex malfunctions are eliminated by representatives of repair bodies and specialists of field teams of manufacturers directly in the rear areas of a special military operation. At the same time, the recovery time of damaged equipment has been reduced to a minimum, which indicates the high readiness of our military-industrial complex not only to produce reliable equipment, but also to maintain it in constant readiness for use.
– What is the situation with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles during combat operations for reconnaissance purposes and fire adjustments, taking into account the experience gained?
– Unmanned aerial vehicles are still the most effective means of obtaining intelligence information. They are successfully used as part of reconnaissance and strike (fire) complexes, providing fire damage to identified targets in real time.
Unmanned aerial vehicles are also effectively used to highlight targets when using modern high-precision ammunition of the Krasnopol-M2 type.
Also, since the beginning of the special military operation, we have significantly increased the number of unmanned aerial vehicles as part of artillery formations and military units.

– Which of the various types of weapons and military equipment of missile troops and artillery showed maximum efficiency and reliability in real combat conditions during a special military operation?
– The successful performance of combat missions by missile troops and artillery is ensured thanks to the high tactical and technical characteristics of modern domestic rocket, rocket and artillery systems, such as the Iskander-M operational and tactical missile system, the Tornado-S multiple launch rocket system, the 152-mm Msta-S self-propelled howitzer. Their use as part of reconnaissance and strike (fire) complexes, which include modern means of artillery reconnaissance "Zoo-1M", "Hawk-AV" and unmanned aerial vehicles, only increases the effectiveness of use and survivability on the battlefield.
– What samples of modern weapons and military equipment are supplied to rocket and artillery military formations?
– I would like to note that by the beginning of the special military operation, all missile formations were equipped with a modern Iskander-M missile system, which is still the best in its class of weapons.
Multiple launch rocket systems, both large and medium caliber, of the Tornado family (300-mm MLRS Tornado-S and 122-mm MLRS Tornado-G) continue to enter the rocket formations.
Artillery units are equipped with upgraded 2S19M2 "Msta-S" self-propelled howitzers that have proven themselves positively during a special military operation.
Also, during the special military operation, 82-mm self-propelled mortars "Drok", 120-mm self-propelled artillery guns "Phlox" and 152-mm self-propelled artillery guns "Malva" are already undergoing experimental combat operation, confirming the high tactical and technical characteristics.
– What are the main directions of development of next-generation multiple launch rocket systems? What – taking into account the experience of ITS own – qualities should a promising technique possess?
– The multiple launch rocket systems in service with rocket troops and artillery have proven themselves positively during a special military operation. Having a longer firing range compared to barrel artillery, they are also effectively used in counter-battery warfare.
In particular, taking into account the experience of a special military operation, work is already underway to determine the promising appearance of multiple launch rocket systems.
The main global trends in this class of weapons are as follows: the use of new types of loading, including "batch" loading; increasing the range of projectiles; increasing combat effectiveness through the use of high-precision ammunition; increasing the level of automation in the control of combat vehicles.

– Has the development of new high-precision ammunition for artillery systems and multiple rocket launchers been completed?
– The use of high-precision ammunition, as the experience of a special military operation has shown, can significantly increase the effectiveness of enemy fire damage.
Currently, taking into account the experience gained, multiple launch rocket systems are moving into a qualitatively new state – high-precision weapons with increased fire efficiency.
This has already been achieved in the Tornado-S MLRS, which replaces the Smerch and Hurricane multiple launch rocket systems, which in its combat kit, in addition to unguided projectiles for hitting area targets, also has guided missiles for selective destruction of individual objects, which are effectively used in a special military operation.
The improvement of barrel artillery is carried out through the development of a new type of high-precision ammunition for selective destruction of certain important targets. The development and effective use of the guided artillery shell "Krasnopol-M2", which surpasses its predecessor ("Krasnopol") in basic characteristics, has already been completed and is being carried out during a special military operation.
And within the framework of the "Coalition" theme, high-precision ammunition with an increased firing range has been developed not only for the 152-mm "Coalition-SV" complex, but also for existing 152-mm artillery systems. Their approbation is expected in the near future.
