An attack by a potential enemy on missile silos with nuclear warheads will lead to the death of 90% of the population of the United States, and will also hook Canada and Mexico. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Boston, who calculated the consequences of such a blow. Scientific American writes about this.

Scientists participating in the University's Science and Global Security Program simulated a strike on missile silos in five American states: Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana and North Dakota. According to calculations, a targeted strike on mines, and not on cities, will lead to an even greater catastrophe, in the first four days from 340,000 to 4.6 million people will die, then another 300 million people will receive a lethal dose of radiation due to fallout. This will lead to the destruction of 90% of the US population.

It is estimated that in order to destroy one missile silo, it is necessary to strike next to it with one or two warheads with a capacity of one kiloton. This will be enough, despite all the protection of the mines. The detonation of all available missiles will lead to the fact that the entire territory of North America will become uninhabitable.

The only real way to avoid such a scenario, scientists called the rejection of the use of nuclear weapons. At the same time, the Pentagon is calling for the use of nuclear weapons as a "deterrent."
