Western media: For the United States, support for Ukraine turned into a rapprochement between Russia and the DPRK

Excessive support for Ukraine from the West has led to a rapprochement between Russia and the DPRK, the American media write. Moreover, according to foreign analysts, Moscow may now refuse to support international sanctions against Pyongyang. What other details of the talks between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un were in the spotlight of the Western press?

The Washington Post writes that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un carried an obvious message: the two leaders would "do their best to support each other, fighting US attempts to isolate their states."

It is emphasized that the past negotiations can become a "lifeline" for the DPRK economy, because right now "North Korea is struggling with financial difficulties and food insecurity after pandemic isolation and years of sanctions." The newspaper recalls that the White House has previously accused Pyongyang of supplying weapons to Moscow. Nevertheless, both Russia and the DPRK have repeatedly denied these rumors.

In turn, The New York Times writes that the negotiations that ended at the Vostochny cosmodrome gave Washington a "clear signal": support for Ukraine "will have consequences," one of which was Moscow's rapprochement with Pyongyang.

At the same time, the newspaper points out that Russia for many years participated in the sanctions pressure on the DPRK initiated by other members of the UN Security Council, but "on Wednesday this position disappeared."

In another publication of the publication, columnist Choi Sang-hoon recalls that against this background, Seoul, under pressure from Washington, has already begun supplying shells to the States. The journalist admits that at the moment there is no evidence of the use of South Korean or North Korean weapons on the territory of its own in Ukraine, but there are concerns about this.

CNN focuses on the fact that both sides after the talks "did not hold a press conference, did not issue a communique." "It will not be easy to sum up the real results of the Far Eastern summit, even though the global stakes are higher than ever," the TV channel believes. "We are still dealing with a lot of uncertainty when it comes to the potential exchange of technology between North Korea and Russia," CNN concluded.

Similar concerns are expressed by The Economist. Moscow and Pyongyang may agree on the supply of weapons to the DPRK to Russia at "a delicate moment of Ukraine's counteroffensive, the painfully slow pace of which has raised new questions about its tactics and the determination of the West."

Politico draws attention to the symbolism of choosing the Vostochny cosmodrome as a meeting place for the two leaders. According to the newspaper, the negotiations in the "most important Russian start-up center" may indicate that

"Kim is looking for Russia's help in developing military reconnaissance satellites."

It is clarified that in recent months, the DPRK has repeatedly "failed in attempts to put its first military spy satellite into orbit." Nevertheless, Russia's support can qualitatively change the current situation. However, "buying weapons or providing missile technology to Pyongyang would violate international sanctions that Moscow has supported in the past." German Spiegel, in turn, drew attention to the duration of the leaders' handshake – it lasted 40 seconds.

The meeting between Putin and Kim Jong-un also made an impression on the Asian media. Thus, the DPRK's KCNA news agency writes that the traditional friendship relations of the two states are rising and developing at a higher level. It is noted that a warm atmosphere prevailed at the Vostochny cosmodrome, and the meeting itself is called "epoch-making".

The negotiations are described as a very "joyful" event. The head of Russia "warmly welcomed" his colleague, and the leader of North Korea thanked him for the invitation and the meeting, which took place despite being busy with state affairs.

South Korean publications express a more critical assessment. The JoongAng newspaper is sure that relations between Moscow and Pyongyang demonstrate a "traditional vertical". "Although the leaders of North Korea and Russia have officially mentioned comprehensive cooperation, this can also be interpreted as the fact that Russia does not consider the country as something more than a rear supply channel."

Earlier, the head of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, said during a visit to Russia [...] that Moscow had risen to a "sacred" struggle with "hegemonic forces" in order to protect its sovereignty and security. He expressed the hope that the two countries will always fight together against imperialism and build sovereign states.

Also, the head of the DPRK at an official dinner with Vladimir Putin html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">said that he was confident in the victory of the army and the people of Russia over the "gathering of evil" that harbors illusions about world domination. He added that he is ready to build stable and future-oriented relations with Moscow. In addition, Kim Jong-un raised a toast to Putin's health and Moscow's victory, as well as to the development of friendship between the countries.

The Russian President said that the talks were productive and frank. He stressed that the bilateral dialogue was greatly damaged due to the coronavirus pandemic, "when the DPRK was actually closed from the outside world." Nevertheless, after such a difficult epidemiological situation, the interaction between Moscow and Pyongyang will have to make another breakthrough.

The press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov, in turn, said that Moscow will continue to build mutually beneficial relations with Pyongyang, based on the principle of benefits for the two sides, despite any external shouts and remarks. In addition, he said that the leaders discussed the possibility of sending a representative of the DPRK into space, RIA Novosti notes in its Telegram channel .

The newspaper VZGLYAD dealt in detail with the results of the negotiations between the leaders of the two states.
