Pionerpanzer 2A1 Dachs is essentially an armored excavator based on the chassis of the Leopard 1 tank. This machine is the successor to the earlier Pionierpanzer 1 model.
Pionerpanzer is designed for towing damaged vehicles, while its main task is to work with landscapes, provide entrances and exits on water barriers, erect fortifications and other work aimed at eliminating various obstacles on the battlefield.
The first production vehicles of this type entered the service of the Bundeswehr in April 1989. By the end of 1990, 36 Pionierpanzer 2A1, also informally called "Badger", was manufactured and handed over to the German army.
In addition to the Bundeswehr, vehicles of this type are used by the Canadian Army, which has been supplied with nine units of similar equipment, designated Combat Engineer Vehicle-CEV or simply "Badger", which also means "badger" in English.
Pionierpanzer 2A1 Dachs is equipped with a telescopic boom with a return bucket, cleaning and support shields, lifting equipment and a winch, as well as a cutting and welding system and searchlights.
