STOCKHOLM, August 24. /tass/. The Social Democratic Workers' Party of Sweden (SDRPS), which is in opposition, supports the provision of Swedish Jas Gripen fighters to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was stated at a press conference in parliament by the chairman of the party and ex-Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
"Today we, the Social Democrats, want to inform that Sweden should be ready to help Ukraine with [fighter jets] Jas Gripen," she said. "We cannot let Russia win." According to her, Jas Gripen fighters could significantly change the situation of Ukraine. Andersson also stated that Sweden's membership in NATO is a condition for the provision of these aircraft.
The speaker of the SDRPS on military issues, former Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist considers it necessary to immediately begin analyzing the consequences for Sweden of such a step. "This is a big and important decision, and it should be made on a stable basis," he said.
The government has not yet expressed readiness for such a step and stated that in the current situation, aircraft are needed to protect Sweden itself. Since spring, when this issue was first raised, Defense Minister Paul Jonsson has stated that the country does not have Jas Gripen fighters that could be sent to Ukraine.
