MOSCOW, August 23. /tass/. The UK will be able to provide Ukraine with 192 million pounds (about $ 244 million) for the purchase of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, including from British companies. The head of the Ministry of Energy of the United Kingdom Grant Shapps told Reuters during his visit to Kiev.
"This guarantee, which we will provide, should help Ukraine to ensure that <...> in the future its nuclear fuel should not come through Russia," the agency quoted Shapps as saying. The minister said that one of the suppliers will be the European consortium Urenco, whose headquarters is located in London.
In March, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine stated that the country expects to establish its own production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants in three years, which will be able to replace Russian, including on the European market.
All power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants are designed for the use of fuel assemblies, which are currently produced by the Russian company TVEL. Rosatom noted that TVEL will continue to provide Ukrainian nuclear power plants with modern and cost-effective fuel under the existing contract until 2025. In March last year, Energoatom reported that Ukraine completely refuses to purchase Russian fuel for its nuclear power plants and intends to replace it with Westinghouse assemblies. At the end of February 2023, Energoatom announced that all power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants will run on Westinghouse fuel from next year.
