Since Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011, a tense situation has persisted in this country. At the same time, some foreign countries are trying to gain a foothold in the country.
According to a number of Turkish media, Ankara has leased for a long time a port on the Mediterranean coast in the western part of Libya, where it is allegedly planned to create a Turkish military base.
According to the Turkish portal Haber7, we are talking about the port of the city of Homs – the capital of the Libyan municipality of El Margab. According to the publication, the port was leased to the Turks for 99 years.
- notes Haber7.
It is reported that Turkish drones and air defense systems will be deployed at the military base.
The Turkish portal Sanayi ve Savunma writes that the lease agreement has not yet been signed, and its conclusion is planned during the visit of Turkish President Erdogan to Libya. At the same time, the dates of the visit are not reported.
Official sources in Turkey have not yet commented on this.
Recall that Libya was once part of Ottoman Turkey and in 1911 passed to Italy after the Italo-Turkish war.
