Then Vima: a new US military base may appear on the Greek island of Skyros

MOSCOW, August 14/ Sputnik Radio. The United States is discussing the possibility of opening a new American military base on the island of Skyros in the Aegean Sea, writes the newspaper To Vima.

The publication notes that the House of Representatives of the US Congress has adopted an amendment to the Defense Budget Bill (NDAA), which calls for considering the possibility of expanding defense cooperation between the countries.

"The amendment adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives has a long way to go to be eventually included in the bill on the U.S. defense budget for 2024, but it seems that it achieves its first goal – to start a discussion on the extension of the MDCA (Greek-American agreement on mutual defense cooperation, – ed.), which with 2021 has a five–year validity period and is expected to be extended in 2026," the article says.

According to the authors of the article, the "strategically important" island of Skyros may be included in the list of "services" provided by the United States under the MDCA. Now the 135th Aviation regiment is stationed there, there is a military airfield, two Israeli-made Heron UAV systems are deployed, and the 22nd division of the Patriot air defense system is deployed.

"Skyros can complement existing American bases, including in Alexandroupolis, Suda, Larissa... The island gives the opportunity to control the entire region," the newspaper summarizes.

Sputnik radio wrote about Greece's plans to expand the production of ammunition for Ukraine.
