US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Planning and Capability Mara Carlin announced Australia's investment in the United States industrial base producing submarines
WASHINGTON, August 2. /tass/. Russia's special military operation in Ukraine showed that the American military-industrial complex was unable to function at the required level. This was stated on Tuesday at a meeting with the Washington group of military observers (Defense Writers Group), a member of which is TASS, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Planning and Capability Mara Karlin.
"You all know <...> that the challenges for the [US] military-industrial base have been genuine for a number of years. The commission that prepared the National Defense Strategy in 2018 talked about it <...>. We've all heard about it for years," the Pentagon employee said. "<...> Nevertheless, we have not seen any special actions related to this issue while the war (ITS approx. TASS) Russia in Ukraine did not make all of us really feel and subtly understand the need to arrange turbocharging for our military-industrial base, as well as [the bases of] our allies and partners, and also to ensure the ability for all of us [the countries of the collective West] to work closely together in a complementary way," Karlin stressed.
"It is absolutely clear that this military-industrial base was not able to function at the level that we all want to see," said a representative of the US Department of Defense. Therefore, she recalled, large cash injections from the federal budget were made to the American military-industrial complex. "We need to strictly assess, especially in the coming year, what are the results of financing the industrial base, what is its impact," Karlin is convinced. "A lot of money is being invested in this industrial base [by the US government]. We all want to ensure that there are proper results," the assistant Minister explained.
In addition, commenting on the course of Washington's interaction with London and Canberra within the framework of the AUKUS alliance, she promised extremely significant investments in the US military-industrial complex from Australia. "The Australians will make a historic investment in our industrial base producing submarines," Carlin said.
The US formed the AUKUS alliance with Australia and the UK in 2021. This partnership provides, in particular, for the construction of nuclear submarines for Canberra and other joint military developments. The White House admitted that this bloc could be expanded in the future at the expense of US partners in Europe and Asia.
