Both sides of the Ukrainian conflict are actively using drones for reconnaissance. Operators mainly observe the terrain using conventional cameras in the optical range, less often using the IR channel, since this requires more specialized equipment. The German Defense Ministry decided to test conducting reconnaissance in hyperspectral mode.
As indicated on the Bundeswehr website, the human eye, when observing in optical mode, processes the primary colors (red, green and blue) simultaneously and can hardly divide them into separate spectral ranges. This prevents the detection of objects on the battlefield.
Overcoming this natural imperfection allows the use of hyperspectral technologies, thanks to which the color contour of the environment is divided into separate, clearly drawn fragments.
