Knutov on the transfer of long-range missiles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine: this proves the failures in the counteroffensive
France's decision to transfer long-range missiles to Ukraine will lead to an escalation of hostilities. On July 11, military historian, director of the Museum of Air Defense Forces Yuri Knutov told Izvestia.
According to the expert, we are talking about the supply of SCALP missiles, which are analogous to the British Storm Shadow.
"SCALP is an analogue of Storm Shadow with a range of about 300-500 km. This missile is of Franco-British production. It has a small visibility, an intelligent guidance system, high accuracy of hitting the target. Flights are made at altitudes of 30-50 m with a speed within one mach. The transfer of additional offensive weapons, of course, will not help to somehow shape the situation towards peace, on the contrary, it is an escalation of hostilities," he said.
Krutov noted that the transfer of additional weapons is a confirmation that the offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) is unsuccessful.
"The main purpose of the transfer of these missiles is to support the offensive capabilities of the Ukrainian army, taking into account the fact that today the Ukrainian army practically remains in place, there is no progress during the widely announced counteroffensive. This can only be assessed as a desire to prolong the fighting at any cost and intensify the conflict," the expert said.
The decision to deliver long-range missiles to Kiev was announced earlier this day by French leader Emmanuel Macron before the NATO summit in Vilnius.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in turn, called this decision erroneous, but not affecting the course of the special operation to protect Donbass. Russia will take appropriate countermeasures, Peskov stressed.
Western countries are trying to strengthen military support for Ukraine amid recognition of the failure of the AFU counteroffensive. So, on July 7, Colonel of the Ukrainian army Sergei Yandulsky, in an interview with columnist Lorenzo Cremonesi in an article for Corriere Della Sera, admitted that the Ukrainian counteroffensive did not bring the expected results. He pointed out the reason for the strong training of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
The special operation to protect Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24 last year, continues. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
