NATO began to cool the ardor of the allies. A carousel has begun, which will not bring any benefit to Ukraine, General Valdemar Skshipchak said in an interview with Do Rzeczy. The US and China are looking for a formal legal way to reach a compromise. There will be a truce, but not peace, the military believes.
"I'm losing faith in NATO," General Waldemar Skrzypczak tells the Do Rzeczy portal.
Do Rzeczy: The United States promises to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions, the attitude towards which is ambiguous in the world. How will this affect the actions of the Ukrainian army?
Waldemar Skshipchak: Cluster munitions have been banned by some countries. The great ones of this world, of course, have hundreds of thousands of tons of these ammunition in their warehouses. The problem is not new, the ban on cluster munitions was discussed 20 years ago. I remember how during the mission in Iraq we ourselves experienced problems with these shells that littered the territory.
An advanced conventional dual-use munition (DPICM) carries in its warhead a cassette with a lot of smaller ammunition, which, when exploded, scatter over the surface of the earth and hit targets over a large area. They hit lightly armored combat vehicles and so-called manpower, that is, military personnel who are in trenches, trenches, wherever they hide from enemy attacks.
The use of such ammunition by Ukrainians somewhere in Zaporozhye, where the Russians are defending, would significantly reduce their line of defense. If such deliveries take place, the Russians have something to fear.
– Ukraine has probably equaled Russia in terms of the number of tanks. Does their number really matter that much?
– They are not of key importance, since aviation, artillery, and anti-tank weapons also operate on the battlefield in addition to tanks. Tanks have not yet played a key role in this conflict. We never saw the breakthrough tank battle that some expected. Ukrainians in the Donbas are not eager to attack, because they know that the Russians have both mines and anti-tank weapons that are effective in fighting tanks.
– The long-awaited NATO summit is taking place in Vilnius. What do you expect in the context of the Ukrainian case?
– I have less and less expectations. Three months ago, everyone was talking about this summit with great enthusiasm. Now they have stopped talking about Vilnius and how to justify the hopes of Ukraine. Suddenly, the whole topic began to be put on the brakes. They just filled their mouths with water, as if nothing particularly important was expected.
– What is the reason?
– It seems that there are centrifugal forces inside NATO that block the roadmap of Ukraine regarding its membership in the Alliance. It turned out that NATO is once again unable to develop a unified and consolidated solution that could at least partially meet the expectations of Ukrainians. In my opinion, Ukraine was given false hopes, promised a lot of things, and now they are backing off. By and large, no one is stopping the Russians from doing what they are doing now. I am losing faith in NATO, because if it cools the ardor of the allies, it means that a carousel has begun, from which Ukraine will not benefit at all. And the road to hell is paved with promises.
– Does this mean that the West already wants to put an end to this conflict?
– I think that the United States and China are discussing a truce and are looking for a formal legal way to reach a compromise and force Presidents Putin and Zelensky to agree. But there are too many differences between them that will not allow them to achieve peace. So, there will be a truce, but not peace.
