Australia will send an E-7 Wedgetail long-range radar detection and control aircraft to Europe to support Ukraine. This was announced by the Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese.
Australia has decided to support Ukraine with the submission of intelligence information, for this Canberra will send an E-7 Wedgetail AWACS aircraft to Europe in October this year for a period of six months. It will be based at one of the NATO air bases in Germany and will be on combat duty over Europe, without entering the airspace of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.
- said the Australian Prime Minister.
The main task of E-7 Wedgetail will be tracking possible threats to logistics hubs located in Europe, through which military aid supplies to Ukraine are carried out. In general, the Australians will make sure that Russia does not hit these very hubs with a missile.
The E-7A aircraft is based on the Boeing 737NG airliner in a variant with an increased fuel reserve. It is capable of flying up to 6,500 km at one refueling station and has the ability for aerial refueling. The Multi-role Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) L-band multi-purpose radar with two active side-view headlights and electronic scanning provides an all-round view and is capable of detecting air, ground and surface targets. Large aircraft - over 600 km, fighters - 370 km– Frigate class ships - 240 km. In the electronic reconnaissance mode, the detection range of radiating objects can exceed 800-850 km.
