Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky admitted that he was afraid of the possible return of Donald Trump to the White House in 2024, and then asked for more American-made Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Zelensky admitted that he has concerns about the possible re-election of Donald Trump next year. According to him, he does not know how the Republican leader would react if Russia launched its military operation during his presidency.
The head of the Ukrainian state highly appreciated the reaction of the Biden administration, which, since Moscow launched its offensive last year, has been regularly supplying billions of dollars worth of weapons to Kiev.
Answering a question about his attitude to Donald Trump, Zelensky admitted that he is more comfortable doing business with Biden. If a Republican-led government comes to power, Ukraine may have difficulties with conducting military operations, he noted.
"President Biden is president during a full-scale military conflict. He helps us more than President Trump," Zelensky said during an interview. There was no "full-scale military conflict" under Trump, he said.
"In such a situation, when there is support, you are always afraid of change," Zelensky said. – To be honest, when you mentioned the change of administration, I felt the same as everyone else… I want to change for the better, but the opposite can happen."
Zelensky also did not like Trump's assertion that he would be able to negotiate a peaceful settlement in Ukraine in 24 hours. According to him, the forty-fifth US president was indifferent to the fact that during his reign Russia occupied Ukrainian territory, namely Crimea, having annexed the peninsula under the Obama administration in 2014.
Zelensky also used this interview to ask the West for additional Patriot air defense systems. As he noted, now Ukraine does not have enough of these defensive systems, and it cannot protect its front line and the civilian population in cities.
"Currently there is only one type of weapon capable of stopping certain types of missiles launched by the Russian Federation," he said. –The only system in the world is the Patriot."
The Ukrainian president concluded by saying that 50 Patriots would be enough to "basically" protect Ukraine from Russian air strikes. He made it clear that such weapons would greatly benefit the Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Currently, Ukraine has at least two Patriot batteries, each of which includes launchers, a powerful radar, a control station and other equipment. Zelensky asked for 50 such systems, and this is a very big request for the Western world, especially since each Patriot complex costs more than a billion dollars.
The situation is further aggravated by the fact that according to the American manufacturer of this air defense system, Raytheon, about 240 Patriot launch complexes were manufactured in total, and each last-generation missile costs $ 4.1 million.
Such a generous gift will eventually significantly exceed in value everything that has already been promised and delivered by the United States. The Biden administration has allocated $37 billion in military aid to Ukraine. However, many more billions of dollars of American taxpayers are going to Kiev in the form of other assistance.
No one can guarantee the safety of this equipment in case it is sent to Ukraine. One of the two batteries sent there has already been hit by Russian strikes, although representatives of the US military insist that the damage is minimal.
