The tankers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have begun to master the Leopard 1A5-DK at one of the landfills located in Eastern Europe. As the project " RG: Russian weapons " notes, such armored vehicles were removed from the Danish Ground forces and mothballed, now the German company FFG is engaged in their restoration.
As expected, at least three dozen pieces of equipment will be transferred in the first batch, this is enough to form one battalion. The total number of Leopard 1A5-DK in the APU can be about 180.
This modification is based on the Leopard 1A3, it has a welded turret of a characteristic angular shape with spaced armor. This design solution has slightly increased the level of security compared to the earliest models. At the same time, the thickness of the frontal part of the body remained unchanged - only 70 mm.
By today's standards, the firepower of the 105-mm L7A3 cannon is considered insufficient, which was previously repeatedly confirmed during test firing on the tanks received, operated in the GDR army.
It should be noted that Leopard 1, although involved in operations in the territories of the former Yugoslavia and Afghanistan, but never fought with real T-54/55, T-62 or T-72 of Soviet production. The A5 version received an improved fire control system with thermal imaging channels of sights, but this is not enough to successfully resist modern Russian models.
