Most African countries have long been guided by Soviet and then Russian combat systems, including due to their lower cost and ease of operation in comparison with Western counterparts. However, gradually the Chinese defense industry is beginning to displace exports from the Russian Federation. In particular, this applies to artillery weapons.
So, in Ethiopia, Chinese 155-mm SH-15 6x6 wheeled self-propelled guns equipped with an armored body were seen. Earlier, during the war in Tigray 2020-2022, the local army had already tested products from China – towed guns Norinco AH2, which were used along with Soviet guns D-20 and ACS "Msta-S".
- noted in the 21AAR edition.
The SH15 is not difficult to distinguish from earlier models of Norinco howitzers produced on a cargo chassis. The car is recognizable thanks to the three-axle suspension and six support wheels, low ground clearance, a double cabin with a noticeable gap on the roof, which is used to accommodate the barrel of a howitzer equipped with a cylindrical muzzle brake. Ammunition is located in boxes installed on both sides of the bed.

The main advantage of wheeled self-propelled guns in comparison with tracked ones, such as "Msta-S", is a lower price, less burdensome in cost and complexity of maintenance and repair. At the same time, there is no question of any, if I may say so, combat advantages.
Among other Chinese products purchased by the Ethiopian army, you can specify the Type 85/89 tracked APC, Type 90 wheeled APC, 302-mm MLRS Weishi. However, as indicated in the publication, the local command remains committed to Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons, organizing air defense around the Great Renaissance Dam. The construction of this structure continues, despite active protests and threats from Sudan and Egypt, located further downstream of the Nile.
