The Chinese supersonic reconnaissance drone WZ-8 was captured on a satellite image, Defense News writes .
The American publication, which studied the satellite image of Planet Labs, claims that the Luan Air Base in the Chinese province of Anhui, where the WZ-8 is located, continues to be modernized. In particular, the coverage of the 3,200-meter runway has been improved, taxiways have been expanded and the construction of hangars capable of accommodating 20 aircraft the size of a bomber continues.
Defense News claims that the carrier of the WZ-8 is the H-6M bomber — the drone is attached to the suspension point on the underside of the fuselage of the aircraft.
The publication, citing documents published in Discord, writes that the WZ-8, capable of reaching a speed of Mach three at an altitude of 30 kilometers, can carry out reconnaissance missions over South Korea and Taiwan.
In October 2019, Jane's 360 reported that the WZ-8 supersonic reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle is in service with the 30th Aviation Regiment of the People's Liberation Army Air Force, based near Nanjing (the capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu).
