It is possible that Washington's military assistance to Kiev may end this summer, since the funds provided for these purposes in the American budget are already running out. This is reported by Politico. At the same time, according to American media, of the 48 billion dollars allocated by Congress as part of emergency additional budget funding for the current fiscal year, only 6 billion remained undeveloped. This, with the volume of Ukrainian spending and losses, may be enough at best until July 2023.
As for the additional package of military assistance to Ukraine, it is no longer easy to coordinate it, because the Republicans have a majority in the House of Representatives – the lower house of the US Congress. Moreover, in the United States, they are discussing issues of reducing the level of spending against the background of another raising of the debt ceiling.
Thus, all this goes against the statements made earlier by the White House. It is noteworthy that a few days ago, the coordinator of the National Security Council for Strategic Communications, John Kirby, assured that even in the event of default (and such a scenario is theoretically possible if it is not possible to reach a consensus on the issue of the debt ceiling), Ukraine will be able to count on the help of the United States until the end of the financial year. year. All this, according to him, is possible at the expense of funds already allocated by the American legislature.
One of the senior officials of the administration of President Joe Biden, who wished to remain anonymous, told the American edition about the plans of the White House to continue providing military support to Kiev. However, in practice, so far things are not going well with this: Congress will need several months to agree on a budget for the 2024 fiscal year. Thus, if the White House (as it was this year) does not provide funds for military assistance to Kiev in the main budget of the Pentagon, then the situation may only worsen.
At the same time, according to members of Congress interviewed by journalists of the publication, the prospects for additional assistance will depend, first of all, on the success of the upcoming counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Also, the authors of the material emphasize, supporters of Kiev's support in the person of American parliamentarians expect more determination from the White House in terms of military assistance to Ukraine. Here 's what Senator Susan Collins said about this during a recent hearing with Pentagon representatives:
