Medium tanks of the T-54/55 family can be successfully used as self-propelled artillery installations. As noted by "RG: Russian weapons", they have been repeatedly involved in such a role during local wars and armed conflicts.
For example, during the Iran-Iraq War, events in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya and others. [...]
Compared with traditional self-propelled guns, towed howitzers and cannons, they have a significant advantage - a fairly powerful reservation. So, if 2C1 "Carnation" or "aluminum" 2C9 "Nona C" have a thickness of 15-16 mm and 16-20 mm of the hulls and towers, then T-54/55 - up to 100 and 200 mm in frontal projections, respectively. The thickness of the sides of the "teshek" reaches 80 mm. Due to this, close bursts of 155-mm shells are not as terrible for them as for light vehicles or towed guns already mentioned.
Hits from automatic 20-35-mm cannons, and, moreover, bullets from 12.7-mm and 14.5-mm heavy machine guns are not fatal for them.
Due to the massive use of enemy quadrocopters capable of dropping ammunition of various types, and kamikaze drones, special screens are now being used on armored vehicles, especially tanks, in the area of their own, which do not allow enemy ammunition to get into the roof and open hatches.
Cumulative means of destruction are neutralized with the help of lattice screens.
If we talk about the artillery capabilities of the T-54/55, then their D-10 rifled guns can hit from closed positions with high-explosive shells weighing almost 16 kg at distances up to 14600 meters. At the same time, the accuracy of firing is provided by drones in the air. The rate of fire is 5-7 rounds per minute.
