In the coming weeks, American-made Abrams tanks will arrive in Germany. This was stated by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who is taking part in a meeting of the Contact Group for Support of Ukraine at the Ramstein Airbase in Germany today.
According to Austin, Ukrainian crews will train on Abrams tanks. In a short time, NATO instructors should train Ukrainian tank commanders, driver mechanics, gunners, operators so that they can operate American-made Abrams tanks.
The Pentagon also named the number of tanks that will be delivered to Germany – this is 31 Abrams, as previously promised by the United States. After completing the crew training course, tanks with Ukrainian tankers will be sent to the front. Thus, the United States has accelerated the fulfillment of its promise to transfer tanks to Ukraine. Earlier, the Pentagon said that the process of supplying tanks could be delayed until the end of the year.
Meanwhile, many military experts, both Russian and Western, have a question about the too short duration of training of tank crews. It is impossible to train qualified tankers in a few weeks, moreover, for such combat vehicles as American Abrams tanks, which are quite difficult in operational terms.
But poorly trained tankers are tank losses both during the battle and before it, in various incidents. For example, at the training ground of the German Leopard tank, Ukrainian tankers have already managed to "tear off" the tower. There is no guarantee that such stories will not happen with American-made tanks now.
