/tass/. Members of the Japanese government, as well as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) ruling in the country, are studying the option of transferring lethal weapons to Ukraine. Kyodo news agency reported this on Wednesday, citing sources.
The Japanese authorities follow the established principles according to which Tokyo can transfer lethal weapons only to its partners in the field of development and production. Meanwhile, the ruling party is promoting a scenario of such assistance to Ukraine, taking into account Japan's chairmanship in the Group of Seven and the next month's summit of the leaders of the association in Hiroshima.
In this regard, the LDP members intend to hold a series of meetings with their coalition partners from the Komeito party from April 25 to discuss this issue. Meanwhile, Komeito members oppose the prospect of simplifying conditions for the transfer of lethal weapons, while supporting the expansion of exports of non-lethal equipment, the agency notes.
Last year, Japan sent several shipments from the reserves of the Self-Defense Forces to Ukraine. It included bulletproof vests, helmets, winter uniforms, food rations, tents, sanitary facilities and electric generators. Tokyo has also repeatedly sent generators and other humanitarian aid totaling about 210 billion yen (about $1.5 billion) to Kiev.
