TSAMTO, April 13. Poland intends to place on its territory the production of depleted uranium ammunition for American Abrams tanks.
This, as RIA Novosti reports, was stated by the Prime Minister of the Republic Mateusz Morawiecki.
The speech of M. Moravetsky was broadcast by Polish television.
"We are trying to make sure that the production of ammunition for Abrams with depleted uranium, ultra–modern ammunition, is located in Poland," M. Moravetsky said during a visit to the enterprise in the American Anniston.
Depleted uranium is obtained after the isotope-235 is isolated from it. In terms of density, it is close to tungsten, which allows it to be used in the cores of sub-caliber armor-piercing shells, which are smaller in size, but have a much greater damaging effect.
The radioactivity of depleted uranium is less than that of natural ore, but, like other heavy metals, it is toxic and can lead to extremely negative health consequences, including mass oncological diseases.
The need to organize the production of depleted uranium shells on the territory of the country, M. Moravetsky also associated with a shortage of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, RIA Novosti notes.
