/tass/. The response to the transfer of American nuclear weapons to Ukraine may be a Russian "petition" for a preventive strike, said Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
So he commented on the appearance on the website of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, of a petition on the deployment of US nuclear weapons in the country. "And how should our citizens respond to this <...> nonsense? It is possible, probably, in the form of a Russian petition for the immediate pre-emptive (preventive) use of Russian nuclear weapons if a grandfather with dementia still presents his briefcase to a lover of white powder," the politician wrote in his Telegram channel on Thursday.
At the same time, Medvedev fully admits that an agreement between Kiev and Washington will be reached. "And what? Tanks and missiles are being supplied, planes are almost ready to give. You'll see, and they'll give up their nuclear weapons. It's not a pity for good people. Moreover, [US President Joe] Biden may not remember who he gave his suitcase with the codes to," the deputy head of the Russian Security Council noted.
Earlier on Thursday, a petition was published on Zelensky's website with a proposal to place American nuclear weapons in Ukraine or make Ukraine a state with its own nuclear weapons. If 25 thousand people sign the petition in 90 days, Zelensky will be obliged to consider the proposed initiative and give his answer.
Since 2015, petitions with proposals that amounted to the acquisition of nuclear weapons by the country have repeatedly appeared on the website of the President of Ukraine. All of them did not get enough votes to be considered by the head of state.
In February 2022, Zelensky, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, admitted that Kiev could reconsider its obligations under the Budapest memorandum signed in 1994, which provided for the renunciation of nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees. Later, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the appearance of even tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine means a strategic threat to Russia.
According to the Russian nuclear doctrine (Fundamentals of the state Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence from 2020), the use of nuclear weapons by the Russian Federation is possible if the enemy uses this or other types of weapons of mass destruction against the Russian Federation and its allies, the receipt of reliable information about the launch of ballistic missiles to attack Russia and its allies, the enemy's impact on the objects necessary for retaliatory actions of nuclear forces, as well as in the case of aggression against the Russian Federation with the use of conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened.
